Hierarchical Mappings

There are different Jira features that can be used to organise issues into a hierarchy, such as Epics, Advanced Planning in Jira Cloud, Advanced Roadmaps in Jira DC/Server, Issue Links, and 3-rd party plug-ins. Ceptah Bridge needs to be configured differently in each situation.

Before continuing, you need to identify your Jira deployment type. Is your Jira Cloud or self-hosted Data Centre or Server? If you are unsure, please ask your Administrator.

Jira Cloud

Without opening an issue page, do you see a proper multi-level hierarchy in your Jira?

Jira Cloud with Advanced Planning or a 3-rd Party Plug-in

If you can see all issues organised in a hierarchy on a single screen, then you are either using Advanced Planning or a 3-rd party plug-in. Advanced planning is part of Jira Premium and Jira Enterprise editions of Jira Cloud. There are also a number of 3-rd party plug-ins that can present issues as a hierarchy.

Are you using Advanced Planning (ask your Jira administrator if unsure)?

Jira Cloud with a 3-rd Party Plug-in

If you are using a 3-rd party app to build and visualise hierarchies, and it stores the information by creating Issue Links, then you may be able to leverage Ceptah Bridge to synchronise the hierarchy with Microsoft Project. To do that, first you will need to find out how exactly the 3-rd party plug-in works. Your Jira administrator and the developers of the plug-in may be able to help you with that.

If the app indeed uses the native Issue Links, then you can try to synchronise them as described here: Mapping Epics and Issue Links in Jira Cloud.

Jira Cloud without Advanced Planning and 3-rd party plug-ins

If your organisation does not use any tools for modelling WBS in Jira, you can still build a hierarchy using Epics, Issue Links and Sub-Tasks. You won't be able to browse this hierarchy on a single screen, but it will be possible to open individual issues to see their parent and children.

Jira Datacentre or Jira Server

Without opening an issue page, do you see a proper multi-level hierarchy in your Jira?

Self-hosted Jira with Advanced Roadmaps or a 3-rd Party Plug-in

If you can see all issues organised in a hierarchy on a single screen, then you are either using the Advanced Roadmaps plug-in from Atlassian or a 3-rd party plug-in.

Are you using Advanced Roadmaps (ask your Jira administrator if unsure)?

Self-hosted Jira with a 3-rd Party Plug-in

If you are using a 3-rd party plug-in to build and visualise hierarchies, and it stores the information by creating Issue Links, then you may be able to leverage Ceptah Bridge to synchronise the hierarchy with Microsoft Project. To do that, you will need to find out how exactly the 3-rd party plug-in works. Your Jira administrator and the developers of the plug-in may be able to help you with that.

If the plug-in indeed uses the native Issue Links, then you can try to synchronise them as described here: Mapping Epics and Issue Links in Self-hosted Jira.

Self-hosted Jira without Advanced Roadmaps and 3-rd Party Plug-ins

If your organisation does not use any tools for modelling WBS in Jira, you can still build a hierarchy using Epics, Issue Links and Sub-Tasks. You won't be able to browse this hierarchy on a single screen, but it will be possible to open individual issues to see their parent and children.
